My first experience in the construction industry was in 1969 during my sophomore year of high school. My first job was to construct a grape stake fence. By the time it was done, forever had passed and I was still broke, but the fence was straight and the client was happy. The client gave my name to his friends and neighbors and the phone started ringing. During my last two years of high school, I was able to earn a little extra income. A lesson was learned.

To help support myself during college at Western State in Gunnison, Colorado, I was a construction worker and peeled wet tree logs for a fence post company. The job paid .50 cents per each log peeled. At the end of the first day I earned only $2.00 per hour. With practice I improved the technique. By the end of the first month I was earning over $10.00 per hour. Another lesson was earned.

After over 25 years of being in the new home and remodeling construction business nothing has dramatically changed. Once the builder's credentials have been carefully researched and qualified the bottom line is still the same. If the homeowners and contractors take pride in what they each do, work hard and care about their family and friends the relationship and the finished product will both far exceed the imagined expectations. It is always a team effort. Trust and respect mixed in with good communication always yields a good relationship. The greatest beneficiary is the new home or remodel where it shows the most.

I am so grateful to be a part of this Company today. We are now incorporated as Behr Building Co. Inc. DBA Behr Construction Co. We have grown in size and stretched our wings but goals and priorities are stronger today than ever before. We are a team. All of our employees and subcontractors are respected, supported and praised for their commitment. Each one makes a difference. Without their professionalism and loyalty we have no clients, no peace of mind and no reason to show up to work. When a new client calls us again for more work or gives our name to a friend we have accomplished our goal. We cannot control the economy but we are able to embrace our own philosophy.

I am so happy to share in the management of this company with Jeff Baker, John Mills and Kurt Knechtel, all of whom are experts in their field.
